Happy Mother’s Day weekend!  To begin the celebration early, check out the essay I wrote for the Modern Love section of The New York Times.  It’s online now; the print version will appear in the Sunday paper.

Overfed on a Mother’s Affection

By SUNG J. WOO

My mother held out a Tupperware container of chicken thighs and drumsticks, roasted with kimchi, bell peppers, onions and scallions. It’s a great dish, one of my favorites.

“No,” I said.

My mother and I don’t fight often nowadays, because I’m 41 and she’s 72 and we lead separate lives. I see her once every two weeks. She makes me lunch, we shop at Costco, she makes me dinner, then she sends me off with grocery bags full of her cooking.

We’ve been on this schedule for the last eight years, since my father passed away. But on this evening, near the end of my visit to her senior apartment, I could tell we were going to argue.

“Just take it,” she said.

“I can’t.”

“It’s just one more.” There was an edge to her voice. “Why are you being difficult?”

Should Be on the Onion: A-Rod Benched for World Series Game One

The World Series starts tonight, and I thought for sure the sports section of the Onion would’ve had a story like this.  But there isn’t, so here’s my homage.

A-Rod Benched for World Series Game One

SAN FRANCISCO–San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy has released the lineup for the first game of the 2012 World Series, and once again, slumping third baseman Alex Rodriguez has been benched.

“Alex is going through some struggles right now, and I’m afraid this is what we need to do for the good of the team,” Bochy said.

Jim Leyland, the manager of the Detroit Tigers, has also released his lineup, and Rodriguez is not on the roster.

“We could not have gotten here without A-Rod, but this is the World Series. To win four games, we’ll have to make some tough choices,” Leyland said.

Rodriguez, who is currently sitting on a bench in Central Park, could not be reached for comment.

The Great Write Off!

I’m participating in The Great Write Off!  That’s right, no more taxes!  I’m gonna be just like Wesley Snipes, except no jail time.  Okay, I kid.

The Great Write Off is a friendly competition between six Michigan non-profit literary organizations to raise awareness and much needed funds for our causes. Just click “Sponsor Me” to make a donation on my behalf toward Fiction Writers Review.

I’ve written a review for FWR and FWR has interviewed me.  They’re a great bunch of word-loving people doing some great stuff.  Let’s keep them rolling!

A Letter of Apology to My First Draft

A year ago, I completed the first draft of my second novel.  I’m still rewriting it, and while doing so, I had an idea to write it a letter.

Dear Love Love,

Yesterday, you were born.  You were not an easy delivery, for the ink on my laser printer was ready to give out.  I fed thirty sheets of you at a time so I could take out the toner and shake it, to make sure the words on your pages printed solid and streak-free.  I carried you from the output tray to the stack.  I watched you grow.  I picked you up.  You were as warm as a blanket in my hands.  Bound with a long rubber band, you were my hefty, luminous bundle.

“Trespassing,” at the Asian American Literary Review

Fresh off the press is the Spring 2012 edition of the Asian American Literary Review.  A short story I wrote is in this issue (“Trespassing”), so there’s no better time to support these good folks.  You’ll also find works by Ed Park and Ed Bok Lee, and even some writers not named Ed.  Check out the table of contents and the sampler and order yourself a copy!
